NASA’s moon base plan begins in 2026 with robotic and uncrewed missions, not astronauts. The architecture is organized into three phases from 2026 through at least 2032, with Phase I running now through 2029 and focused on more than 20 robotic landings to prove access, test technologies, and characterize the lunar environment before humans arrive.
The technical significance is high: the first phase is explicitly about reducing risk, validating landers, rovers, cargo delivery, communications, and surface operations in the lunar south polar region. NASA’s selected and announced hardware includes Blue Origin’s Blue Moon Mk.1, Astrobotic’s Griffin, Intuitive Machines’ Nova-C, and other robotic vehicles that will lay the groundwork for infrastructure needed for long-term habitation.
The Ark should treat this as a live benchmark for resilient lunar logistics, autonomous construction, and polar-site selection. Priorities: track reliability data from each lander class, evaluate south-pole resource-access claims, map which systems are being hardened for repeated cargo delivery, and preserve mission architectures that could be adapted for emergency shelter, food, power, and communications redundancy in a civilizational recovery scenario.
