NASA’s Artemis III planning now focuses on nine potential landing regions near the lunar South Pole: Peak near Cabeus B, Haworth, Malapert Massif, Mons Mouton Plateau, Mons Mouton, Nobile Rim 1, Nobile Rim 2, de Gerlache Rim 2, and Slater Plain. The list was refined from 13 candidate regions identified in 2022, and NASA says the regions will be further examined for scientific and engineering suitability for the first crewed Moon landing in more than five decades.
The technical significance is direct: these regions were selected because they combine terrain safety, lighting conditions, communications potential, and science value, especially access to permanently shadowed areas where water ice may exist. For a long-term lunar presence, this is a survival problem, not just a landing problem—site choice determines power continuity, thermal control, line-of-sight communications, mobility risk, and whether local resources can reduce dependence on Earth supply chains.
Ark team action: track the final down-select process, the mission architecture changes tied to Artemis III and Artemis IV, and any data on illumination, slope, and ice-access tradeoffs for the nine regions. Priority research should focus on regolith handling, polar energy systems, comms relay placement, and excavation near shadowed cold traps, because these factors will shape any durable lunar settlement and any future civilization-restart capability.
