ESA completed a summer 2025 optical communication campaign using two observatories in Greece and NASA’s Psyche mission, achieving four out of four successful deep-space laser links while the spacecraft was more than 300 million kilometres from Earth.[1] The campaign escalated in difficulty across the links, culminating in a reception of a 1.3 Mbps data stream and a final transmission that carried a cat video at speeds up to 1.8 Mbps.[1] ESA said the collected data will now be analyzed to evaluate system performance.[1]
The mission demonstrates that optical links can function beyond 2 astronomical units, with a stable ground segment and precision pointing sufficient to close interplanetary links at distances around twice the Earth-Sun separation.[1] For the Lunar Ark, this is directly relevant to high-bandwidth off-world archives, rapid software and knowledge synchronization, and secure telemetry for autonomous lunar infrastructure, especially when radio spectrum congestion or jamming becomes a constraint.[1]
The Ark team should track ESA’s post-campaign performance analysis, the maturation of the Helmos/Kryoneri ground-station model, and any operational standards that emerge for deep-space optical communications.[1] Priority research: radiation-tolerant optical terminals, acquisition/tracking resilience, weather-diversity ground networks, and hybrid radio-optical fallback architectures for lunar and cislunar links.[1]
