NASA reported that Gateway’s Power and Propulsion Element was successfully powered on for the first time, and that the element is designed to generate 60 kilowatts of power for the lunar-orbit station.[8] NASA said the milestone shows the spacecraft can provide power, high-rate communications, attitude control, and orbit-raising and maneuvering functions.[8] The system is being managed by NASA’s Glenn Research Center and built by Lanteris Space Systems in Palo Alto, California, where the main electrical system has been secured inside protective exterior panels.[8]
Technically, this is a proof-of-function event for one of Gateway’s most mission-critical subsystems: power generation plus solar electric propulsion.[8] For lunar habitation and preservation strategy, that matters because reliable power, communications, and station-keeping are the backbone services any orbital node must provide before it can meaningfully support crewed operations, cargo routing, or emergency refuge. However, NASA’s broader 2026 policy direction also indicates Gateway in its current form is being paused in favor of surface infrastructure, so this milestone may end up informing lunar base systems more than a fully realized orbiting station.[3][4][6]
The Ark team should track whether the 60-kilowatt PPE startup leads to further integrated system tests, whether the station’s Artemis IV crew-access timeline remains intact, and whether any Gateway hardware is redirected toward surface infrastructure.[7][8][3] Priority research should focus on how Gateway-class power, communications, and electric propulsion can be adapted into resilient lunar relay, depot, or emergency-habitat architectures that remain useful even if the orbital station is reduced or repurposed.[8][3][4]
