NASA Langley Research Center is seeking industry, academic, nonprofit, and government partners for the Demonstration in the Lunar Environment of Autonomous Robotic Construction (DiLE-ARCon), an Early Career Initiative project released on January 13, 2026. The agency wants partners to provide at least one of two core systems: a robotic manipulator or a robotic mobility platform, and the partnering call allowed both U.S. and non-U.S. organizations to respond by February 18, 2026 at 4:30 p.m. Eastern. The project is intended to culminate in a final hardware demonstration in fiscal year 2028, with the work framed around a TRL 6 demonstration in a vacuum chamber using lunar regolith simulant.
The technical target is more than a lab demo: NASA says the project supports future lunar surface infrastructure, including radiation shelters and communication towers, by proving autonomous robotic construction in lunar-like conditions. For the Ark, that matters because it directly reduces dependence on immediate human labor for building survivable surface assets, which is critical for redundancy, shelter hardening, dust-tolerant logistics, and rapid infrastructure recovery after lander loss, equipment failure, or environmental exposure.
The Ark team should track DiLE-ARCon partner selections, hardware specifications, and whether NASA prioritizes loaned existing systems versus new builds, because that will reveal the most mature architecture for near-term lunar construction. The team should also monitor the manipulator and mobility performance thresholds implied by the solicitation and compare them against Ark requirements for shelter emplacement, regolith handling, and autonomous maintenance, then identify any overlap with our own construction, staging, and repair robotics roadmap.
