NASA says the Near-Earth Object (NEO) Surveyor, its first infrared space telescope built specifically to discover potentially hazardous asteroids and comets, is now undergoing integration and testing.[2] NASA’s planetary defense program says the mission is designed to help discover and characterize most potentially hazardous asteroids and comets that come within 30 million miles of Earth, and current NASA guidance says the mission is expected to launch in the fall of 2027, with some planning documents describing launch by 2028.[4][6][12]
For the Lunar Ark, the mission matters because earlier detection directly improves warning time for both Earth and lunar assets, and it increases the chance that orbital hazards are identified before they become trajectory-planning emergencies.[4][5] Infrared survey capability is especially important because it targets dark or hard-to-see objects that optical surveys can miss, improving completeness of the hazard catalog and reducing existential-risk blind spots.[2][4]
The Ark team should monitor NEO Surveyor’s integration milestones, launch schedule, and any published performance expectations for detection completeness and characterization of hazardous objects.[2][6][12] The team should also track how NEO Surveyor data will be combined with NASA’s NEO Observations Program, ground-based observatories, and future planetary defense exercises, because that combined warning architecture is the relevant resilience layer for lunar settlement planning.[5][14]
